Answers to some of the most common questions we receive can be found below

01

How often are prenatal appointments?

Routine prenatal appointments are every four weeks until 32 weeks of pregnancy and then every two weeks until the 36th week. From 36 weeks until you have your baby we see you weekly. Additional visits for other concerns are scheduled as needed. Most visits are held in our office and last about 45 mins.

04

Do you offer lab work and routine prenatal tests?

We discuss prenatal testing at visits. We teach and encourage families to learn as much as possible to make informed choices. Routine tests include screening for anemia, gestational diabetes, blood-typing and screening for infections which could affect your baby. We do not perform ultrasound exams in our offices; however, when they are indicated or if you would like to have one, we will gladly give you a referral. We do not require “routine” ultrasounds, however there are reasons we may request that you have one.

02

Does care continue postpartum?

A midwife routinely comes to your home on days 1, 3 and 7. Or more if needed for lactation guidance or troubleshooting. You come back to the office two weeks after your birth for your “first big outing”. Then you return for a final 4-6 week postpartum visit in the office.

05

Will you bring supplies to my birth?

In addition to decades of education and experience, we bring many things. We have various ways of listening to a baby’s heartbeat so we’ll know the baby is responding normally to labor.  Around 36 weeks you will be given a birth kit  to take home. This kit includes sterile instruments for cutting the umbilical cord, resuscitation equipment, suction devices, medications that may be indicated, as well as all the supplies needed to andminsiter IV fluids. We also provide you with a list of supplies you should gather around your home.

03

Will you take care of my baby after birth?

Midwives in NY are licensed to care for newborns in the podtpsrtum period. This means we are not only caring for you but your baby as well. If any concerns arise we would refer your baby to their pediatrician. Most clients will take their baby to see the pediatrician by 8 weeks old.

06

What happens if I need to go to the hospital?

When you have private care, signs of problems can be recognized and addressed before they become emergencies. If you or your baby needs medical care which cannot be provided in your home, we contact the appropriate facility, accompany you with your records and a midwife stays with you for continuity of care and advocacy. In the event of a non-urgent trasnfer our preferred hospital is Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. We have a collabortaive agreement with the Midwives and Doctors there.
